CanvassCommand Terms of Use
Last updated: October 18, 2026
CanvassCommand is a field-organizing tool that political campaigns and advocacy organizations use to run canvassing. These terms apply to everyone who uses it: the person who requests a campaign (the "campaign owner"), and the staff, organizers, canvassers and volunteers the campaign gives access to. By accepting these terms in the app, or by using CanvassCommand, you agree to them. How we handle personal information is described in our Privacy Policy.
In short: voter data in CanvassCommand belongs to your campaign and to whoever licensed it to your campaign (for example, a state party's VoteBuilder/VAN). Use it only for your campaign's voter contact, never share it outside your campaign, keep your login to yourself, don't enter anything you know is false, and delete any exports within 30 days.
1. Permitted use
You may use CanvassCommand, and any voter data in it, only to organize and carry out your campaign's electoral activity: canvassing, voter registration, persuasion and getting out the vote. You may not use voter data for personal, commercial or other non-electoral purposes. If your campaign's voter data comes from a licensed voter file, your use must also stay within that license. Where the license is narrower than these terms, the license wins.
2. Who owns the voter data
Voter file data is owned by the organization that licensed it to your campaign (such as a state Democratic party or the DNC) and is held by your campaign under that license. Information your campaign collects itself belongs to your campaign, subject to any terms in its license. CanvassCommand claims no ownership of either. We store and process it only to provide the service to your campaign. Using CanvassCommand gives you no ownership of any voter data.
3. No sharing outside your campaign
- Do not sell, rent, lend, give, disclose or otherwise make voter data, or lists, maps or reports made from it, available to anyone outside your campaign without your licensor's written approval.
- This includes other candidates and campaigns, even ones on the same ballot or in an overlapping district, unless each has its own license that allows sharing.
- Give access only to people working under your campaign's direct control. Volunteers with temporary or supervised access must return any printed lists or copies to the campaign to be destroyed when they are done.
- CanvassCommand keeps each campaign's data separate from every other campaign's, including campaigns in the same race.
4. Your account
- Use only the account assigned to you. Never share your username or password, and never sign in with someone else's.
- If you think someone else has used your account, tell your campaign and us right away.
5. Accurate information
Never enter information into CanvassCommand, or change existing information, if you believe it is false, or without caring whether it is true. That includes door knocks, survey answers, registrations, hours and counts.
6. Access you should not have
If you can see voter data, a campaign or a feature you know you should not have access to, whether because of an error or any other reason, do not view, use, download or export it. Email info@canvasscommand.com right away so we can fix it.
7. Exports and copies
- Export or download voter data only when your campaign has authorized it, and only for voter contact (for example, a mailing or a walk list).
- Delete exported voter data, and every copy of it, within 30 days of the export.
- Do not load exported voter data into other systems, such as spreadsheets, shared drives, cloud databases or other apps, unless your licensor has approved it in writing.
- Do not export repeatedly to get around a limit your licensor has set.
8. Prohibited uses
You may not use CanvassCommand or voter data to:
- break any law, or promote illegal activity;
- harass, threaten, abuse, defraud or deceive anyone, or send material that is defamatory, obscene or harmful to minors;
- call or text people in violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act or FCC rules, or send spam;
- select or treat people unlawfully based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, familial status or veteran status;
- decide anyone's eligibility for credit, insurance, housing or employment, or for any other purpose regulated by the Fair Credit Reporting Act;
- violate anyone's privacy, publicity or intellectual-property rights;
- introduce malware, probe or attack the service, or reverse engineer, scrape or copy it in bulk;
- build or train models, scores or other derived products from voter data, except as your licensor allows.
9. Campaign owner responsibilities
When you request a campaign, you confirm that:
- your campaign is entitled to use any voter data it brings into CanvassCommand, and that its license allows that data to be stored and processed by an outside service like CanvassCommand. Some licensors require written approval first. The Texas Democratic Party, for example, does not allow VAN data to be kept outside VAN without it, so get that approval before loading or syncing voter data;
- you will give accounts only to people under your campaign's direct control, make sure they accept these terms, and remove access when someone leaves; and
- you are responsible for how the people you give access to use CanvassCommand and your campaign's data.
10. Security incidents
We protect campaign data with encrypted connections, per-campaign access controls and limited staff access. If you learn of, or suspect, any loss, misuse or unauthorized access to voter data in CanvassCommand, tell your campaign and email info@canvasscommand.com immediately. If we confirm an incident affecting a campaign's data, we will notify the campaign owner within one business day so the campaign can meet its own notice duties to its licensor, and we will cooperate in returning or deleting affected data.
11. AI and service providers
Some features send campaign data to service providers, for example to transcribe recorded conversations (Deepgram) or review transcripts (Anthropic). These providers process the data only to provide the feature, and we use settings and agreements under which campaign and voter data is not used to train their models. CanvassCommand does not use campaign or voter data to train models either.
12. When a campaign ends
- When a campaign closes, when its access to a voter file ends, or when the campaign or its licensor asks, we delete that campaign's voter file data from CanvassCommand and, on request, give the campaign a copy of its own data first, if its license allows.
- When your access ends, you must stop using voter data and delete any copies you hold, in any format, unless your licensor has authorized you to keep them.
13. Suspension and termination
Your campaign, or we, may suspend or end your access at any time, including immediately if you break these terms or your campaign's voter file license. A campaign's licensor may also require us to end its access. These terms stop applying to new use when access ends, but sections 2, 3, 7 and 12 continue to apply to any voter data you still hold.
14. No warranty
CanvassCommand is provided "as is" and "as available." To the extent the law allows, we make no warranties about it, including that it will be uninterrupted or error-free or that data in it (including voter file data supplied by others) is accurate or complete. You use it at your own risk.
15. Changes
We may update these terms. If a change is significant, we will update the date above and ask you to accept the new terms in the app before you continue.
